The French Bulldog – From a Historical Perspective

The name bulldog is English, and as such, the English were taken by surprise when French breeders of a toy imitation of the actual bulldog from England were named after their country. It is a known fact that bulldog was for a long time an embodiment of the cultural values of the English people. It is for this reason that Englishmen did resent the toy version of the bulldog that the French people came up with. This would be a mockery of their culture and beliefs. The period around the 1800s saw some massive exodus of toy bulldogs across Europe from England to France. To differentiate them from the British bulldogs, the French breeders embarked on a journey of trying to instill some traits that were unanimous to French culture. This is what led to some of the breeds today: American bulldogs, Frenchies and Bullies.

The bulldogs do require a lot when it comes to rearing them, and as such the breeders should actually be people of utmost commitment for them to succeed. As anticipated, each of the three species does demonstrate totally different traits form each other and it requires good breeders to take care of these needs, as well as teach buyers on how to take care of the bulldogs.

The buyers need to have information about these bulldogs before buying them. They should know that the different types do share some aspects like requirements; health matters and how to groom them among others French bulldogs do have Pug like noses accompanied by wrinkles. Something to consider is the fact that they do have short muzzles, a condition that can easily expose them to expiratory problems due to the fact that they might find difficulties with breathing. The dogs are poor at responding to the ever changing climatic conditions and as such should be indoors. If left in hot temperatures, they are likely to suffer from heart stroke.

For health reasons, a breeder has to always ensure that the ears and wrinkles are kept clean. This is to ensure that moisture and bacterium are kept at bay. They do react badly with excessive weights, and so should be exercised regularly and monitored to avoid the condition. Bulldogs are prone to obesity and should be kept active and taken on at least a daily walk.

The French bulldogs have been identified to be social animals. Owners are advised to reciprocate this nature (being social). Bulldogs are known to have a history of be aggressive. For this reason, the breeders are advised to take charge of the dogs and manage any inconsistency in their behaviors from when they are puppies.
